"we need a miracle today in Lebanon"

So says Barbara Massaad this week. As president of Slow Food Beirut, and author of "Mouneh", documenting the preserving of food in Lebanon, Barbara can see and feel the consequences of a collapsing economy. What can shorkk do?

Our initiative came about as a result of feeling hopeless in the face of the catastrophic economic disaster in Lebanon. Could a family living in Bristol help? While the economic crisis gets little news coverage in the UK, the statistics are staggering. The local currency has lost 90% of its value, inflation is in triple figures, prices change so fast shops don't bother displaying them on products. Children's lives are being hugely affected by the crisis as Lina Sinjab's recent report for the BBC shows. The World Bank notes that Lebanon's GDP has been reduced by 58%. To put it in context, during its economic collapse of 2009-10, Greece's GDP contracted by 24% (see A Tale of Two Crises: Greece and Lebanon Compared).

The photograph above, taken by Nabeel Yakzan, shows a basket full of the essence of Lebanon. Good quality ingredients, from a country with a noble culinary history. This is why we started shorkk - bringing the best of Lebanon to UK kitchen cupboards. We're delighted by so much positive feedback from customers enjoying Lebanese olives, pomegranate molasses, saffron and olive leaf infusion.

So, next time you're in Majestic, look for Lebanese wine; find a Lebanese restaurant where you live, or try one of our recipes below; check out the work of photographer Nabeel Yakzan whose haunting images capture Lebanon's decline, or forward our newsletter to a friend. Might we even suggest that Zejd's extra virgin olive oil would make an ideal Father's day present? Just don't forget Lebanon.

Nabeel Yakzan's photographs distil an unsettling image of Beirut's streets. Since 2019, his work has added poignancy, revealing the fragility of a traumatised society. Absent from his photographs is the glamour for which Lebanon is famous, he tells a different story.
Prints are available on his website.
