an update from Lebanon

The devastating news from Lebanon changes by the hour, but here is a round up of what we're currently up to.

We've checked in on our suppliers, who are ok. Zejd, whose olive groves are in the north, is preparing to harvest next month. Bassatin Baanoub, not far from Sidon in the south, hasn't been directly affected.

We have sold out of their oregano. They are in the process of preparing a new order for us; we ask for your patience in being able to restock.

help on the ground

Thanks to customers at the Abergavenny Food Festival, we were able to send some money to Najdeh Association this week. They are assessing the needs of Palestinian refugees and Syrians who have been forcibly displaced from their homes in the south. While most of their support comes from UNRWA, having some extra cash to buy food for families is essential. So thank you.
A community kitchen in east Beirut, Nation Station, is cooking meals for the displaced as well as providing things for people to be able to live in a school.

We'll be donating 20% of our profits at Shepton Mallet Sunday Market to Nation Station.

Please email us if you would like to make a donation. Currently 252 schools are being turned into places to receive those forced to flee their homes.

Land Stories

If you're in Bristol come and join us on 16th October for Land Stories, planned long before this week's attacks on Lebanon.
Philippe Pernot, a journalist based in Lebanon, will report from Beirut on the devastation to farm land in Gaza and south Lebanon. Petra Mansour will chair the discussion with Ped Asgarian from Feeding Bristol, Sally Azzam and Dr Michal Nahman.

100% of the profit will be shared between bee keepers in south Lebanon and the Palestine Institute for Sustainability & Biodiversity in Bethlehem. Below is a link to Philippe Pernot's article about the museum.

We have kept back 20 bags of za'atar mix to be sold to raise money for hives for bee keepers in south Lebanon.

"Art is the opposite of war"

An article about artists in Lebanon featured a friend of ours, Nathalie Khayat, a ceramicist in Beirut. Interviewed by Gareth Harris for The Art Newspaper, she talks about the "deafening sanitised silence" from the world.

A comforting plate which has it all. Making a little bit of mince go a long way, eating some greens full of flavour, thanks to the garlic, coriander fried in a lot of Zejd's extra virgin olive oil, this is a Lebanese culinary work of art.

a final word

Obviously we are affected by what's happening because of our links with Lebanon.

We believe that we should all be taking an active interest in what is happening, not just because of Lebanon, but because of our shared humanity. There are many alternative sources of news available. If you're interested, follow us on instagram or twitter.
