queen of sumac

A screen shot of Chef Ayesha Kalaji from Queen of Cups
Temptingly close to Bristol, we're delighted that Chef Ayesha Kalaji, owner of Queen of Cups in Glastonbury, is a fan of Zejd's EVOO and sumac.

While her signature dish is an intriguing laverbread falafel reflecting her Welsh upbringing and Jordanian roots, she loves the "zippy-zing sumac adds to salads and dressings".
She thinks of herself as the "unofficial ambassador for sumac" using it on sweet and savoury dishes.

She suggests making a syrup with the sumac, for a pitcher of sumac-ade over the summer, and infusing its tart brightness in ice-cream. Roll on the summer!

good for your health

We're wondering if sumac will catch on in the UK in the same way as olive oil has because of its health potential?

If you're interested to find out more on this spice, read our shorkk story.
Philippe (shorkk's other half) recommends trying it on eggs. Once cooked, sprinkle on a generous amount. Frying the eggs in Zejd EVOO, for crispy edges, is an easy way to add more polyphenols to your diet too!

10% off chilli infused oil

Always popular on a pizza, we often drizzle Zejd's chilli infused oil when we want a bit of a kick in a soup or some hummus.

And it's on special offer!

Environmentalist killed by an Israeli drone

Oussama Farhat should have been in hospital recovering from the surgery that removed shrapnel in an Israeli attack.

A volunteer who took care of wild animals and recorded Israeli phosphorus attacks, Farhat was killed by an Israeli drone having discharged himself and returned to Marjayoun, a district in south Lebanon.
The Lebanese journalists Emmanuel Haddad interviewed him on 16 April. Little did he imagine he would be writing a tribute to him a month later for Orient Today.

something to listen to...

We loved listening to this animated conversation about ancient Mesopotamia. Dr Moudy Al Rashid, an honorary fellow at Wolfson College, University of Oxford, shares her knowledge on Afikra, a Lebanese platform promoting a deeper cultural understanding of the Arab world.

Author of the book Between Two Rivers, Dr Al Rashid brings Mesopotamia to life through vivid examples recorded in cuneiform tablets.

seasonal shorkk recipe

ricotta citrus olive oil cake

If you haven't baked with olive oil before, why not try this recipe? No need for a food mixer, blending the sugar with the oil is easily done by hand.

Zejd's EVOO is mellow tasting and doesn't over power the cake!
