Lebanese liquid gold is back!

The gods were smiling on us yesterday. Our long awaited pallet arrived from Lebanon, missing the rain and thanks to the haulier the 1 tonne pallet was safely lowered to the ground (despite looking precariously close to falling off the edge!)

This year we feel even luckier to be able to share Zejd's EVOO with our UK customers. Native variety olives unique to the eastern Mediterranean are in short supply in Lebanon.
We've updated our stock, ready to send out Zejd's Lebanese liquid gold. It's good to have the distinctive olive aroma back in our depot.

award winning premium

Zejd's premium EVOO has achieved a silver award at the 2024/25 Olympia Awards for Health & Nutrition in Athens.
The premium EVOO has a total of 815mg/kg polyphenols. This is considerably higher than supermarket EVOOs which will average around 300mg/kg. Careful processing and early harvesting all contribute to the quality of the polyphenols.

Rich in anti-inflammatory compounds and anti-oxidants, it has standout health benefits. You can read more on House of Zejd's blog below.

more aromas

It's not just the oil we've been missing. Zejd's olive leaf infusion and saffron from the Bekaa valley sold out last year, so it's wonderful to have them back on shorkk's shelves.

counting the cost

A report by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN in Lebanon considers the impact of Israel's attacks on Lebanon's agriculture from 8 October 2023 to 27 November 2024. The data is alarming. "The agriculture sector in Lebanon has incurred an estimated $118 million damages and $586 million losses".

The olive farming sector saw the highest level of losses. In just over a year $236 million were lost as a result of Israel's destruction of olive groves and because farmers weren't able to harvest particularly in the south of Lebanon.

Native varieties of olive trees require at least 10-15 years to produce fruit. Will farmers in Lebanon have to resort to planting non-native varieties like arbequina which crop after 2 years? Supporting farmers, like Youssef Fares of Zejd, who grow native varieties is essential to support Lebanon's agricultural heritage.
