hope for Lebanese farmers?
The dire situation facing Lebanese farmers featured in an article by Jenny Gustafsson in The Guardian this week. She visited Yasmina from Bassatin Baaanoub whose oregano and za'atar mix we import. Busy harvesting their olives, Yasmina pointed out that Bassatin Baanoub's farm is " at the southern most limit of where people can harvest this year".
While we import Zejd's extra virgin olive oil from Beino, in the north of Lebanon, the article points out that 22% of Lebanon's olive oil production has been lost this year as a result of the destruction of farmland. For farmers who have had their livelihoods wiped out and for the stability of Lebanon, these are frightening times.

aromatic oregano
If you're in Bristol, look out for Hart's Bakery Danish made with a sprinkling of Bassatin Baanoub's oregano. It was enough to tempt Sabrina Ghayour, the British Iranian chef and food writer, to buy our last remaining stock of oregano in September.
